Extended Orientation
First of all, I must apologize for not posting sooner. College life is somewhat crazy, and this blog is very low on my list of things to do. (I'm still asking myself why I started this in the first place...)
Well, Saturday night we watched a movie (V for Vendetta), and most of us got to bed around 1:30 or so. I swear I had been asleep for only about ten minutes when loud knocking and banging occurred, and several people burst into our room with flashlights. Extended Orientation had begun.
We tumbled out of our beds and hurriedly put on old clothes that had been set aside for this exact purpose. I was taken to our RA's room, and was forced to sit down with my head down. No talking was allowed. After a wait, as they rounded up as many freshmen as possible, we were taken out one by one to begin the ordeal.
First, I was sat down in a chair, and plastic was tied around my wrists (why this was done will become evident later on). I was blindfolded, and they pretended to shave a patch of my hair. I wasn't really fooled (I didn't care too much either way), but I know some other guys were. :)
Then, we were lined up in another hall, and finally herded out to separate cars. We were driven in a maze around town, and ended up at the LeTourneau soccer fields. There we were chained together at the wrist with those plastic ties, and we had to find three guys in an undisclosed amount of time, or they would go and leave us. Well, after some backtracking and circling, we found all three. Then we had to go through an obstacle course on our way back to the Quad, still tied together, and still blindfolded, though one of our team could take his blindfold off and lead the others. We had to avoid trees, walk over and crouch under wires strung across our path, delicately dance our way through parking lots filled with cars, and deftly trying to avoid (and failing to) water balloons that were tossed in our general vicinity.
We made it back alright, and were soundly congratulated for passing EO. We then had a nice little party at 4:30 or so with our sister floor, eating ice cream, chips, and downing lots of pop. Needless to say, I didn't get much sleep, and also did not go to church the next morning. Yes, I am a horrible infidel.
It was a very fun time though, and I'm glad I did it. It was easier this year, from what I heard, because the upperclassmen used to make the freshmen go through underground drainage tunnels, bent over, chained together, and blindfolded. I don't think that would have been as fun...

Well, THAT is over :-) Maybe now the real business of college can begin.
The kids and I took a vote and we have not proclaimed you a horrible infidel. Of course, several of the younger ones had no idea what the word "infidel" meant...and some of us are still arguing about the various shades of meaning ascribed to "horrible," so yeah, your whole "status de modifier" is still up in the air.
You know, I was always a bit disappointed that I never got to see those drainage tunnels before I graduated.
