Valentine's Day

So, I listen to the radio online a lot at work. And, unfortunately, when you have a "holiday" such as Valentine's Day, you get some very annoying commercials, ads, etc. Actually, the most annoying ones are the local ads, for some banquet or some other occasion to celebrate the day. But, I digress...

Valentine's Day irks me. And really, it isn't so much the day itself or the holiday, but more how people interpret and think about it. Basically, Valentine's Day is a special day to do something nice for that, uh, how do they say it, "significant other". Anyways, I liken this to some peoples' (frankly, too many people) view of Sunday. Sunday is a special day. We have to think and act like Christians, not like we do the rest of the week. Be like the world every day of the week, but on Sunday, it is time to be a Christian, to think pure thoughts and to give thanks for everything.

Have people forgotten that we should actually be doing this every day of the week, not just Sunday? We're not Christians one day of the week, but every day. So, I see Valentine's Day as the same deal. People act like there is this one special day to be very nice to someone else. Then, of course, get back to the normal everyday relationships, which, unfortunately, all too often aren't that good. Seems to me that every day should technically be Valentine's Day. Just in the same way that we shouldn't be Christians one day of the week, but every day.

Well, I ranted again. I could probably go on for another few pages or so, but I would end up boring everybody, and probably myself. So, I'm just happy that Valentine's Day is over, and I shouldn't be hearing those commercials anymore...

Well, the kids here like Valentine's Dayishness because--for the first time in about five or six years--I think your father and I are actually going to make it to the church banquet tonight. The kids' part being they won't have to share spaghetti pie with us PLUS they get to see a movie :-)

But I agree that it is annoying to hear the harping and acting like one has to do something extraordinary, which is why your father and I don't do anything for each other (usually) because it seems so fakey when you're made to do something nice.

(Boy, I hope we don't play any dumb games around the dinner tables tonight....)

I think I knew it was Valentines's Day at the time, although I lacked the proper festive spirit. This was apparent when my chemistry lab partner commented that I wasn't wearing pink. You can only imagine the horror of the moment. Gone was my only opportunity of wearing an appropriate color for the day. I was thinking of something black....
